Interim CEO

Being without a CEO for any length of time can be stressful for the board and the staff. Vicki is available to step into that gap to ensure the organization stays stable, allowing you to take your time and be thorough and thoughtful in your new CEO search. We can even help you with the CEO search itself to ensure you have a great process in place to find the perfect person, with maximum confidentiality to the candidates, and without swamping your board or staff with search-related tasks.

Board Development and Governance:

A good board is essential to any association’s success. Yet so few operate with any clear leadership model or understanding of their critical role, leading to frustration and lack of results. There is a better way.

We are Jim Hawarden, CEO, and Vicki Hawarden, COO, co-founders of Hawarden Group, and we have spent a lot of time working for associations – in a board room or on a trade show floor. We believe associations change the world, so helping them with that mission is what gets us going every day.

Between us, we’ve done every job there is to do in an association. Our clients come back to work with us year after year because we know our stuff and we make them more successful. But they also keep us around because we have fun and treat our clients like the VIPs they are.

Here’s what we are about: authenticity, humor, achievement, purpose. With us, you’ll get a team that works together seamlessly to reach the goal, with a sense of camaraderie. We do what needs to be done to get you where we promised you’d go.

Jim focuses on sales and operations. He knows how important it is for your event to achieve its revenue goals while being operationally excellent. He is great at strategizing with you on your program and marketing so you attract attendees and exhibitors, and he’ll help you create an aggressive but achievable sales goal, and then he’ll exceed it. He is a relationship guy, so he’ll make sure your exhibitors and attendees leave happy and come back next year. Jim’s the engine.

Jim has handled sales and logistics for exhibitions for 25 years, ranging in size from teeny to the mind-bogglingly huge. He makes friends wherever he goes, with a heart for developing long-term relationships with you, your exhibitors and your members. Once clients hire him, they never want to let him go.

Vicki focuses on sales and operational strategies, and on helping boards govern better. She’ll guide you to improve your processes and programs to achieve maximum return. And she can help your CEO and your board practice good governance, propelling the association to greater achievement. Vicki can also step in as interim CEO for clients when they have a leadership gap. Vicki’s the rudder.

Vicki has served as CEO of the International Association of Venue Managers and as VP of Meetings for Meeting Professionals International and the International Association of Exhibitions and Events. She has an insightful mind and an authentic approach. People who work with Vicki know she’s deeply committed to her work and her clients and will move mountains to help them succeed, and she’s pretty good at moving mountains.

Vicki graduated from the University of Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner!) with a degree in Journalism, and Jim graduated from the University of Texas (Hook ‘em) with a degree in Spanish and French. As a result, Octobers in their house are always very interesting.
